House of Mirrors
We sit by windows
waiting for the coffee to make itself out of water
wishing the windows weren’t made of glass
you and I we are not see through
like these windows and waters we watch the world with.
I am thirsty
when I sit with you the water tastes better
we are made of water
I am soaking but I don’t know how to swim
in my own blood.
I want to slap you, make you look in the mirror
make you stop smiling
I want you to dance with me
like you really mean it
as if these steps you take are a song
you couldn’t finish singing
because you forgot the words.
We always dance in front of the mirror
pausing only to drink our water
singing only the songs
like waterfalls, they fall off my tongue.
I feel like I’m in dirty water
making waves when there could have
been calm stillness
instead I dream about flamingos
while you bring me flowers
these birds of paradise are your favorite…
This is what I see when I look out my window
I see rented space, who are we renting the earth from
God? Mother Nature?
I see cars that are standing still
In the rain it looks like my shadow
is someone else’s shadow
and she’s dancing instead of me.
This is the house of mirrors
where I look fat and I seem
ugly, actually ugly when my face is distorted
how many me’s are there
in these dusty mirrors
where I can barely my own, your own, face.
They say the best thing when you are thirsty is water
they say everything else is fake quenching
stop your Gatorade, stop you Cokes,
drink your dirty water schoolgirl
drink it till it hurts.
They say it’s fun house
but I’m not having any fun
if I wanted to kill myself don’t make it so easy
here I will give you my gun.
Politicians and diplomats discuss the poison
they swear you should drink
they don’t even see, that water is a mirror, a window
whatever is in there is in me.
